PRANAYAMA

Pranayama (also known as conscious breathing or breathwork) is for EVERYBODY.

You don't need to know or practice yoga and you don't even need activewear.

In fact, you are encouraged to wear inactive - wear to be as comfortable as possible.

It doesn't matter your fitness level, height, weight, age, gender, race or range of mobility,

you can join any of the pranayama classes or private appointments at The Art of Breath.

The Art of Breath focuses on gentle techniques that are suitable and safe for EVERYBODY.

You are welcome just as you are.

The most important relationship you have is with your breath, from your very first to your last.

You are incredibly lucky as your breath is not only unconscious, you can also

consciously bring scaffolding and expansion to it to explore it and use it for your benefit.

You have the ability use your breath to regulate and support yourself, it's the greatest tool you have,

it’s free and it's always with you.

Some of the benefits of Pranayama you may experience are:

  • improved nervous system regulation

  • improved lung function

  • improved cardiorespiratory system

  • improved nasal respiration

  • improved cognitive function

  • improved digestive system

  • improved core muscle tone

  • improved immune system

  • improved sleep quality

  • improved blood pressure

  • reduced inflammation

  • self connection

  • self empowerment

  • feeling balanced, calm and connected.

You are more empowered than you may think, and my intention is to gently introduce

you to some of your internal resources and tools that will support you in your everyday life,

leading to a secure inner home-base, self-empowerment and resilience.

Are you ready to empower yourself one breath at a time?

YOGA NIDRA

Nidra means sleep, so Yoga Nidra literally means yogic sleep. It is a sleep based meditation bringing you to a state between waking and sleeping, like the feeling you get just as you fall asleep. It works by slowing your brainwaves to states like those in sleep whilst remaining aware. You become free from the concepts of time, space and reason and when this happens, brain activity reduces and the body enters a state of healing. As the body enters this healing state, it clears toxins at a cellular level, refreshes your mind and removes obstacles from your subconscious.  It is said that 45min of Yoga Nidra offers the same benefit as three hours’ sleep.

YIN YOGA

Yin yoga is a slow form of yoga where you hold a shape for 3 to 5 minutes. Each nourishing shape will gently bring balance into your whole body including your nervous system. You will work beyond muscle and deep into joints, facia, tendons and ligaments. The aim is to bring tension, not pain, to targeted areas of your body to encourage space, connection and healing.

GET TO KNOW ME

Hello beautiful breathers, I’m Jilly Newgreen the founder of The Art of Breath. I am a trauma informed yoga practitioner who specialises in pranayama, yin yoga and yoga nidra. I’m all about self-empowerment and coming from a place of calm, balance and love. Do I achieve this 100% of the time? Absolutely not, I’m human and I still have my triggers, but it’s my intention and I do my best everyday to achieve this by using my breath.

I’ve always had a fascination for breath. As a young child I loved to see how long I could hold my breath and how deeply I could breathe in and how long I could make my exhale. I used to like feeling my belly and chest swell with every inhale, it was like making myself as big as I could be. Later in life, whilst walking, hiking and swimming I would use my breath to keep me going by counting my inhale and exhale. I didn’t realise that this was actually pranayama.

I was born in Scotland and moved to Melbourne when I was 9, then to Hong Kong in 2000 and back to

Melbourne in 2013, where I am now based on the Mornington Peninsula. I used to work in a corporate environment in law firms then moved into education and working with children with learning difficulties whilst in Hong Kong.

I became a a fully qualified pranayama practitioner in 2020 and have been teaching pranayama ever since, including offering regular free online sessions during the many lockdowns we had in Melbourne.

I’ve practiced meditation and yoga for over 20 years and more recently pranayama

(also known as conscious breathing and breathwork).  I love and appreciate how everybody can practice pranayama anywhere, anytime, in any clothing and even when you are injured or sick. From the first moment I practiced pranayama, I knew this was something I had to share so, I completed my 100hr Pranayama Teacher Training and started teaching in 2020. It was the greatest honour to have been invited back to

mentor 2021's Pranayama teacher trainees.

In addition, I completed my 50hr Yin Yoga Teacher Training, 12hr Yoga Nidra Teacher Training, 100hr Trauma Informed Yoga Teacher Training. Along with Pranayama appointments, classes and workshops, I offer yoga nidra and yin yoga appointments. I am currently studying EYP (Embodied Yoga Principals) Teacher Training which I will complete this year and look forward to sharing this amazing modality with you.

As clients develop, they learn breath techniques that bring about self-connection, inner resilience and self-empowerment which builds a home-base of balance, calm and love. I have experienced how continued practice strengthens and expands these tools as well as identifying when, where and how to bring them into everyday life.

All the techniques I share with you can be used anywhere,

any time in your everyday life.

COLLECTIVE CONNECTION

6 October 2021

Participants enjoyed an indulgent afternoon of self-care whilst supporting the community.

They experienced a nourishing afternoon of Yin, Pranayama, Nidra and connection with

100% of their $25 donations going to The Homeless Project.

The Homeless Project is a not for profit organisation that provides opportunities for all people

to access safe and affordable housing.

With homelessness on the rise, The Homeless Project aims to:

- design and construct dignified, purpose-built, wheelchair compliant homes for people who are homeless or at risk;
- support and foster innovative research-backed initiatives that address youth homelessness in Victoria;
- offer a free integrative psychological and counselling outreach service;
- connect local homeless people with free meal services; and
- offer free (new) clothing to people in the community who are homeless or at risk.

The afternoon began with a gentle Pranayama practice followed by a short Yin sequence ending

with a nourishing Nidra. No previous experience was needed and no activewear required.

In fact, everyone was invited to wear inactive loose and comfortable clothing and have as many blankets,

cushions, bolsters, pillows etc to make themselves as comfortable as possible.

There was time for all to connect and share after the event as I kept the zoom room open for a further 30 minutes .

I'm so incredibly honoured to have had two co-hosts:

Susan Roper, yogini and all time amazing human of Studio Paradise www.studioparadise.com.au; and

Bree Iliopulos. Bree wears many valuable hats, she is a trauma informed yoga teacher trainer, an accredited Frontline Yoga teacher, qualified Yoga for Seniors Adaptability (disability) and a trauma sensitive and trauma informed teacher. She is also studying psychology and works as an AOD (alcohol and other drugs) and mental health clinician. In addition, Bree wears a chef hat and cooks meals for people who find themselves homeless.

I want to extend a huge thank you to Susan and Bree for their input and support not only to me but to the community.

I am so grateful to all participants who supported this event.

Together we raised $1000 for those who are sleeping rough.
